Portlaoise Court: Judge said man was ‘surplus to requirement’

Portloaise Courthouse
AT a recent sitting of Portlaoise District Court, Judge Susan Fay said that a man who was not present because his wife was undergoing a scan was “surplus to requirement.”
She made the comment when a solicitor for Alejandro Munteanu (23), Castlechurch Park, Newcastle, Dublin failed to appear in court charged with dangerous driving, driving while uninsured and without a licence on the M7 at Cloncough, Portlaoise on 27 May last year.
The solicitor said: “He’s not present. His wife is in for a scan,” to which Judge Fay said: “He’s not present. At this stage, he is surplus to requirement.”
Garda Sgt. Colin O’Leary said that he would agree to the case being adjourned to another date for finalisation.
Setting the date for the next hearing of the case, Judge Fay told the solicitor: “You can advise him that he is very lucky that he’s not eating an Easter Egg in custody.
