THE reason given as to why a driver overtook several cars in a careless manner was because his then fiancée was nagging him because she was late for a nail appointment.
That was the explanation Jeffrey Arthurs (52), Foilbarrig, Cappawhite, Tipperary gave to Judge Andrew Cody at last week’s sitting of the Portlaoise District Court when he was summoned before it for careless driving on James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise on 19 June last year.
The court heard that while on mobile patrol, gardaí observed a driver ahead of them overtake a number of cars before coming to a roundabout.
Asked by Judge Cody whether he had anything to say about the matter, Mr Arthurs said: “I done a very foolish thing. It was my first time in Portlaoise. I did not know the area. I was with my then fiancée who had a nail appointment in Portarlington in 15 minutes. I came up behind traffic and it was a traffic jam. She was nagging me, telling me to ‘go, go, go’.”
Judge Cody noted: “You said you were with your then fiancée at the time. Has that progressed?” “Not anymore,” replied Mr Arthurs.
Noting that it was the defendant’s first offence, Judge Cody fined him €100 for careless driving.
