Portlaoise Court: Man charged with four counts of rape and two indecent assault

A 56-YEAR-OLD man was brought before Portlaoise District Court last week charged with four counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault.
He is alleged to have carried out the offences on dates between 1 September 1987 and 1 September 1988 in Co Laois.
Garda Sgt Colm O’Leary said that after each charge, he cautioned the accused, who made no reply to the charges.
Sgt O’Leary said the accused should be sent forward for trial on indictment and that there was no objection to bail being granted.
Judge Susan Fay remanded the man on continuing bail to the 20 July sitting of the court for the service of a book of evidence.
Defending solicitor Philip Meagher said he was deferring making an application for free legal aid.
* It is a criminal offence to publish any information that could identify an accused person prior to a conviction in rape cases.
