Portlaoise Court: Man refused to get off bus had near-empty Jameson bottle

Portlaoise Courthouse
GARDAÍ were called out to deal with a man who was roaring and shouting obscenities at others and refusing to get off a bus in Portlaoise.
The local district court heard that when gardaí got on the bus, they found the man in possession of a ‘near-empty bottle of Jameson.’
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told Judge Susan Fay that at 2.45pm on the afternoon of 14 June, gardaí responded to a call about a man who was on a Dublin coach that was stopped along James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise.
When they arrived on scene, they came across the man “who was highly intoxicated, roaring and shouting obscenities at other people on the bus and had a near-empty bottle of Jameson.”
He said the defendant had 91 previous convictions.
John Flynn (65) from Ferrycarrig, Coolock, Dublin 17 pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at the time.
Defending, Brian Mallon BL said that he had been instructed to offer his client’s “sincerest apologies” for his actions at the time.
Mr Mallon said that, when sober, Mr Flynn “presents as a pleasant individual,” but that he “battles with alcohol in the background.”
Judge Fay adjourned the case to 3 November for finalisation and in the meantime instructed that the defendant take part in Restorative Justice Programme and asked that a probation report be undertaken on him.
She said: “I want him to understand his actions and the impact it had on the other passengers.”
