A DOMESTIC dispute that spilled out onto the public roadway landed a man in court on public order offences.

At Portlaoise District Court, Sergeant JJ Kirby told Judge Susan Fay that just after midnight on 24 November, gardaí were called to a disturbance at Oakvale Meadows, Stradbally.

When they arrived on the scene they found a man out on the street who was intoxicated. While attempting to speak to him, he faced up to them with clenched fists and had to be arrested.

Sgt Kirby said the disturbance arose from a domestic dispute that spilled out onto the roadside, where members of the public were present.

Arising from the incident, Nicholas Carville, 69 Oakvale Meadows pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at the time.

Defence solicitor Philip Meagher said that at the time his 49-year-old client had been given a job on trial for a couple of days and had extra money. He drank to excess and got into an argument with his partner that went out of control.

He said that Mr Carville, “wants to apologise to the gardaí, to his partner and to his neighbours for his behaviour at the time. He is very embarrassed and ashamed of himself for what happened on the night”.

He said that Mr Carville “had been on a cocktail of medications at the time and should have known he shouldn’t have taken alcohol at all. He admits himself he’s not a quiet drunk”.

Judge Fay convicted Mr Carville of engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour and fined the defendant €300. She took the other matter into consideration.
