A MOUNTMELLICK man was bound to the peace for 12 months when his case came before Portlaoise District Court this week for finalisation.

Gavin Mangan from 23 Connolly Street, Mountmellick had previously pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour in Connolly Street. The public order offences happened on 17 May last year.

A previous court hearing was informed that when gardaí responded to a report of an incident in Mountmellick, they came across the defendant in a drunken state with blood on his face, shouting and roaring at people.

The 37-year-old had 26 previous convictions.

At the previous sitting, Mr Mangan’s solicitor said that his client had been drinking at home before he went out, overindulged and acted inappropriately towards gardaí. He wanted to apologise in open court for his behaviour on the night.

The case had been adjourned to allow Mr Mangan take part in an alcohol awareness programme, a Restorative Justice Programme and for the probation service to carry out a report.

When the case resumed this week, Judge Fay noted that the defendant had complied fully with her orders. She bound him to the peace for 12 months for threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

The other matter of being intoxicated in a public place was taken into consideration.
