A solicitor representing a man who was before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court described her client as a well-read man who does well in prison.

Josephine Fitzpatrick made the comment while she was representing 52-year-old defendant Keith Kilroy with an address at Haven View House, Kerdiffstown, Co Kildare.

Mr Kilroy is currently serving a prison sentence and is due for release on 4 February 2025.

Judge Nicola Andrews heard that Mr Kilroy was pleading guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in a public place at McDonald’s Restaurant, The Kyle Centre, Kylekiproe, Portlaoise on 15 December 2022.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told the court that gardaí issued Mr Kilroy with an on-the-spot fixed charge penalty notice, which subsequently went unpaid.

Ms Fitzpatrick said: “Mr Kilroy always does well in prison. He’s a well-read man.”

Judge Andrews struck out the charge.
