GARDAÍ are warning motorists to take extra care, after a deer was struck by a vehicle on a busy Laois road this morning.
The collision happened shortly before 9.30am on the main road from Abbeyleix to Durrow, which is notorious for deer crossings.
Fortunately, there were no injuries following the incident and the deer was unharmed. It was last seen roaming safely in the Killamuck area, adjacent to Abbeyleix Bog.
A warning posted on the ABBEYLEIX community Facebook page at 9.25am said: ‘Reports just in that a deer has been struck on the Abbeyleix-Durrow road and is roaming free around Coleman’s Road/Killamuck. Please share and proceed with extreme caution. Emergency services have been contacted.’
With the rutting season in full swing, gardaí are appealing to drivers to be extra cautious on local roads known for deer crossings such as the N77 from Abbeyleix to Durrow, where there are large herds of deer in woodlands on each side of the route.
Considerable work has been done in recent years to make the route safer, including large digital warning signs and there have been repeated calls for fencing on each side of the road.
