A HOUSE which has been derelict on the Portlaoise Road, Timahoe, is moving towards being put on the Derelict Property Register. This is the final step before a mandatory Compulsory Purchase Order can be issued by Laois County Council.
The motion seeking an update on the status of the long derelict site was brought to the latest meeting of the Portarlington/Graiguecullen Municipal District by Cllr Paschal McEvoy who received the following response from a representative of the Area Office:
“The regeneration section have commenced proceedings to put the property on the Derelict Sites Register. We will continue to engage the owner and attempt to encourage him to carry out renovations to the property.” In making his case for the urgency of the motion, Cllr McEvoy explained how the property, former Laois County Council social housing, adjoined another property which was currently being done up by a man and his family while the other property was continuing to languish in ruin a few feet from their door.
Cllr McEvoy described the property as horrendous in appearance and an awful eyesore. He explained that he had reached out to the current owner of the property who inherited it from his father but didn’t live near the area about the property, but had very much got the impression that he didn’t get the impression the son wanted anything to do with Cllr McEvoy or indeed Laois County Council.
In concluding statements, a rep for the LCC explained that they had sent a notice to the Derelict Sites Register to log the property as derelict which would then allow the council to issue a CPO a few months from now.
