Elva Kelly offically co-opted to Laois Co Council
Newly co-opted councillor Elva Kelly, being congratulated by former councillor Pádraig Fleming, whom she replaces on Laois Co Council and as a member of Graiguecullen/Portarlington Municipal District
IN the wake of Pádraig Fleming’s retirement, a Fianna Fáil seat in the Graiguecullen/Portarlington municipal district was left vacant, triggering a contest between four Fianna Fáil candidates for the seat, a vote which the newly appointed Cllr Elva Kelly won.
The new councillor was appointed at the latest meeting of Laois Co Council yesterday (Monday). Her appointment was greeted by congratulations from her colleagues across the political spectrum, who also offered her words of advice and reminiscences of their first day in the chamber.
After her fellow councillors had finished, the new councillor gave a short speech in which she thanked the cathaoirleach, her fellow councillors, staff and management of Laois Co Council who had helped facilitate her work and endeavours in the community. Cllr Kelly said: "I’m looking forward to working and learning from all my Fianna Fáil colleagues and all the councillors in the chamber. I hope to continue the good work that is already evident in our communities. I hope my presence in the chamber will have a positive influence on the future of the Portarlington and Graiguecullen municipal district. I promise to bring honest positivity and accountability to my role as a Fianna Fáil councillor for Co Laois"
