GARDA checkpoints are being conducted across Laois over the August bank holiday weekend, as part of an ongoing road safety campaign.
Gardaí said today that a series of high-visibility checkpoints across the county began on Friday, conducted by the Laois Roads Policing Unit in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The checkpoints will continue until Monday night.
Posting pictures on the An Garda Síochána Laois Offaly social media page, gardaí said that one disqualified driver was arrested and charged to appear before Portlaoise District Court, while another vehicle was seized for road traffic offences.
Gardaí said: ‘With the August bank holiday weekend ahead, traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly, especially on motorways and main routes across Laois. Extra checkpoints will be in place across the county this weekend.’
They urged motorists:
*Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy
*Never drive under the influence
*Don’t drive while disqualified or uninsured
*Obey the speed limits
*Buckle up, every time
They added: ‘Let’s all do our part to keep the roads safe. Plan ahead. Stay sober. Arrive alive.’
