Fastest waiters in Laois town!
Brave competitors in the Waiters' Race in Durrow
THE fastest waiter in Durrow has been revealed - and it was well worth the wait.
Precariously balancing a full tray, Millie Conroy from Bob’s Bar sprinted around the green to scoop a valiant victory in the hilarious contest.
Close on her heels was John Paul Murphy representing the town’s Ashbrook Arms, while blow-in Adam Carroll swept into third place for Morrissey’s of Abbeyleix.
About 15 courageous contestants lined out for a waiters’ race filled with thrills and spills on Saturday 9 August, as part of a Durrow Community Hub fundraiser.
The literally smashing event demanded expert skill, as each waiter negotiated the route while carrying a bottle of wine with a cup and saucer on a tray.
Thanking everyone involved in the unusual event for a worthy cause, delighted organisers said on social media: ‘What an amazing group and what fun was had. All racers are winners for us, the pressure was huge for everyone.’
The race was among the highlights of a sun-filled afternoon at the community Picnic on the Green featuring children’s races, a mega slide, fantastic stalls, face painting, family games and amazing pizza, with the inaugural waiters’ race as a fitting grand finale.
It was all part of ongoing fundraising efforts encompassing ‘Friends’ and ‘Durrow goes to Hollywood’. All proceeds from the day will go towards building the new Durrow Community Hub, a space that will benefit the town for generations to come.
Organisers thanked the outstanding ‘Friends’ cast and all the extra volunteers, who gave their time and energy to make the event happen.
They said: ‘You are absolute stars, and your dedication is what makes Durrow such a beautiful place to live, work and visit.’
