FIREFIGHTERS and their families were honoured at a heartwarming event in Portarlington, to recognise the dedication of local heroes.
Spouses, children, firefighters and staff from Laois Fire and Rescue Service gathered at Portarlington Fire Station on Friday 28 November, for the first of eight family appreciation nights to be held at all stations across the county.
The event was designed to express gratitude for the support given by families, whose remarkable commitment enables retained firefighters to serve their communities every day.
A highlight of the evening was a presentation of Chief Fire Officer’s commendation certificates to firefighters Eryk Jakubowski and Hubert Siler, who rescued a person from the third floor during a terrifying blaze at The Oaks apartment block in the town’s Kilnacourt Woods last February.
The certificates were presented by Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Declan Power for both men’s ‘professional conduct and effective performance’ during the blaze when, while wearing breathing apparatus, their brave actions resulted in the saving of a life.
CFO Power said: “Our team members are able to respond to emergencies at any hour because they know their families are supporting them every step of the way.
“This night is a small token of our immense appreciation for the resilience and understanding demonstrated by our families. They are a key enabler for the delivery of this service.”
It is intended to host similar family appreciation nights in the county’s seven other fire stations, which serve Laois and surrounding areas 24/7 and 365 days a year in Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Mountmellick, Rathdowney, Durrow and Mountrath.
