A LONG-AWAITED dog park has finally opened in Portlaoise, seven years after it was first proposed.

The first free 'off the leash' dog park in the county has opened at the Triogue Linear Park, which runs from Green Mill Lane to Millview.

The fenced dog play area is part of the development of the Triogue Way, a shared pedestrian and cycle route from The People’s Park off the Timahoe Road to Green Mill Lane, off the Ridge Road.

The dog park is inside the long riverside park that runs from Green Mill Lane, opposite Dunnes Stores to Millview and Fitzmaurice Place, with signs listing rules for dog owners using the facility.

The dog park was first proposed by then-councillor Noel Tuohy in 2017 and was taken up following his retirement by his wife cllr Marie Tuohy, who replaced him on the county council in the Portlaoise Municipal District. The dog park was finally completed in November and opened just before Christmas.

While the county has a number of private dog parks, including Woofland Dog Park in Morette near Portlaoise, the facility at the Triogue Linear Park is the first free public dog park and is operated by Laois County Council.
