Burglars targeted the popular pub at about 5am on Wednesday 11 September

An early morning burglary at a popular village pub is being investigated by gardaí.

The Gate House pub in Emo was targeted at about 5am on the morning of Wednesday 11 September.

Intruders gained access to the pub through the front door and stole a till containing some money, before making their getaway.

Three men aged in their 20s are understood to have been involved in the burglary, which is being investigated by the garda detective branch in Portlaoise.

Gardai are appealing for information on up to three men, believed to be in their 20s, who were seen acting suspiciously around the general Emo area at the time.

They are also looking for information regarding any unfamiliar vehicles that seemed to be ‘acting suspiciously’ in the area.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the Portlaoise detective branch at 057 8674130 or Portlaoise Garda Station at 057 8674100.

In a separate incident, intruders set off an alarm at a farmyard in Ballykilcavan in the early hours of the previous morning.

Two men were seen in the farmyard at about 3am on Tuesday 10 September and two cars were entered, although it appears that nothing was taken. After the alarm went off, the men drove away in a Volkswagon Golf in the direction of Stradbally.

Gardaí believe the culprits seen in Ballykilcavan may also have been involved in the theft of property from a farmyard building in Shrule, Co Carlow the previous night. The theft of tools worth about €1,600 happened at about 10.30pm on Monday 9 September.

Witnesses or anyone with information about either incident, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage, is asked to contact Portlaoise gardaí.
