Judge bans four teens from Laois Shopping Centre

FOUR young men were banned from setting foot inside the Laois Shopping Centre in Portlaoise when they came before the Juvenile sitting of Portlaoise District Court on Monday.

They cannot be identified due to their ages.

The first of the teens was 17-years of age, who the court heard is currently serving a sentence in Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus and due for release this January.

He is charged with violent disorder at Costa, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise on 22 January.

Judge Susan Fay remanded him on continuing bail to the 1 December sitting of Portlaoise District Court, on the following conditions that he stays away from the other four accused. On his release from Oberstown he signs on at the local garda station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Resides at his home, stays away from the Laois Shopping Centre and obeys an 11pm to 6am house curfew.

The second youth was 17-years of age at the time of the offence. He is also charged with violent disorder at Costa, Laois Shopping Centre on the same date as the first defendant.

Judge Fay adjourned the case and remanded the accused on bail to the 1 December sitting of the court on the same conditions as the first defendant.

The next up was 16-years of age. He was charged with the unauthorised taking of a vehicle between 7 and 8 June last year at The Glen, Kilnacourt, Portarlington and with the unauthorised taking of a vehicle on 8 June from an address at Cosby Avenue, Fairgreen, Portlaoise. He was also charged with violent disorder at Costa, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise on 22 January.

The defendant’s solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his young client had previously spent some time in Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus.

Judge Fay remanded this defendant on continuing bail to the 12 February sitting of the local District Court on the same conditions as the previous three accused.

The fourth defendant was 18 years of age. He was charged with possession of cannabis herb for his own use at the Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise on 11 January and with assault and violent disorder at Costa, Laois Shopping Centre on 22 January.

His case was adjourned to 1 December on the same conditions as the other three defendants.
