A LANDMARK family-run Laois store is set to close, after more than 40 years in business.

Dunnes Hardware & Furniture in Abbeyleix announced the news ‘with mixed emotions’ on social media today, as popular owners Liam and Fiona Dunne plan to sell the property as they approach retirement.

The busy outlet on the town’s Mountrath Road, which opened 43 years ago, sells everything from antique and second-hand furniture to hardware and a wide stock of general household items.

While an exact closing date has not been decided, the owners will begin to wind down the business in the meantime.

In a message to customers, Liam and Fiona said: ‘After 43 years in business, it is with mixed emotions that we wish to formally announce the sale of our property for development.

'We do not have an exact closing date but we will begin to wind down the business in the meantime.

'We have loved serving our community but welcome the next phase of our life.

'We truly appreciate your loyal custom over the years. There will be plenty of bargains in store (as usual!). We hope you continue to support us to the end.

'We will keep you updated. Thank you to all.'
