Speaking to the
, Alf Kelly said: “The club was founded in 1987 by local photographer Kevin Byrne. In the first year we had six members and we have grown to over 30 members at times. Numbers go up and down each year, but most of the current members have been here for several years.“We are affiliated to the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF), where members can submit a panel of pictures and can get their licentiateship, associateship or fellowship. In the past, we have had one fellow, three associates and about eight licentiates.
“The exhibition contains a wide range of photographs from different parts of the world and includes wildlife, landscapes, architecture and portraits. As a camera club, we also take part in the Midland Group Photography, which comprises most of the camera clubs in Laois and Offaly.” Commenting on the library’s first exhibition of the New Year, manager Amanda Hyland said: “We are delighted to welcome Mountmellick Camera Club back and to have the photography group start the 2025 programme of monthly exhibitions in the library.
“There is a wide variety of amazing photographs, from landscapes to wildlife, and the quality of the images is both stunning and fantastic.
"Everyone is welcome to visit the exhibition during library opening hours and we would encourage people to come along to support the local group.” Mountmellick Camera Club organises photography trips around the country and new members are welcome to join. The club’s next meeting will take place on Wednesday 22 January at 8pm in the Mountmellick Development Association (MDA) building and regular meetings are scheduled for every second Wednesday thereafter for the winter months.
