GARDAÍ had to call in Laois Civil Defence when motorists were stranded in the Slieve Bloom Mountains last night.

With mountain roads still covered in snow and ice, a number of vehicles got stuck and had to be rescued by emergency services after darkness fell.

While a welcome thaw is beginning across the county after the big freeze, drivers are warned that it will be some days before the Slieve Blooms and other elevated areas are free of ice and deep snow drifts.

Posting photos on social media on Friday 10 January, Laois Civil Defence said: ‘Tonight, Civil Defence units responded to assist An Garda Síochána Laois/Offaly with a number of motorists, who got stuck on roads on the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

‘While temperatures have risen, it will take a number of days for elevated areas across the county to thaw fully.

‘Where possible, motorists are advised to avoid elevated areas over the weekend. The thaw will be slower in these areas and road conditions will continue to be very poor.’
