Laois Co Council shortlisted for four Excellence in Local Government awards
Abbeyleix Tidy Towns are one of the four nominees from Laois Co Council up for an award
LAOIS Co Council has been shortlisted in four categories in this year’s Excellence in Local Government Awards. The awards are held by Chambers Ireland in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and are sponsored by Perigus Energy.
The council has been shortlisted in the following categories:
Age friendly initiative for the Live Well Health and Wellbeing Initiative, which is an annual event attracting over 2,000 attendees. The event aims to provide clear, accessible signposting to health and wellbeing supports and services across Laois communities.
Urban Revival for the Portlaoise Convent Lands project: a housing regeneration and urban renewal initiative led by Laois Co Council in partnership with Sophia Housing. The project transformed a large, historically significant town centre site that had been approaching dereliction into a vibrant, inclusive residential quarter.
Supporting Sustainable Communities for Abbeyleix: growing a sustainable, inclusive community together through a long-standing partnership between Abbeyleix tidy towns, Laois Co Council and local stakeholders, the town has delivered a wide-ranging programme focused on care for the environment, social inclusion, heritage conservation and quality of life.
Municipal district initiative for the regeneration of the historic Market House, Portarlington. Identified as a key historic anchor in the town centre, Market House has been restored for modern civic use. It now operates as a community and civic hub, providing public space, meeting rooms, exhibition and workshop areas, office accommodation and support facilities.
Reacting to the nominations, Michael Rainey, chief executive, Laois Co Council, said:
“We are very proud to see Laois Co Council nominated in four categories in this year’s Excellence in Local Government awards. These nominations are a recognition of the vision, commitment and ambition of the staff of the council to deliver meaningful and sustainable projects in partnership with communities and stakeholders throughout the county.” The awards will be presented on Thursday 26 November in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Dublin.
