A CREATIVE crochet artist from Laois has been shortlisted for a national award by a new government agency.

Courtney Murray from Mountmellick has won many fans and followers with her boldly imaginative and sustainable designs, which have been snapped up by buyers ranging from the US to the UK and throughout Ireland.

The young designer is thrilled to have made the shortlist for a Full Circle Award, as one of only nine individuals nationwide to be selected in the Creative Circular Artist category.

The new award scheme is run by Circular.ie, a government initiative that is due to be launched on 24 September as Ireland’s national hub for ‘circular innovation, action and solutions’.

The new national platform for the circular economy aims to ‘empower activists and organisations’ across the country to share their stories and inspire change.

Aged in her late 20s, Courtney describes herself as ‘just a fibre-obsessed lady making her way through life one stitch at a time’.

Using original designs and eye-catching colour combinations, her striking handmade pieces are truly unique. She has also been involved in art and craft exhibitions and installations using spare wool and materials, including a show at the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise. Her creations can be viewed on her Instagram page at Courtneyjeanmurray.

When the shortlist was announced, Courtney posted on social media: ‘I am delighted to be included alongside such an inspiring group of people. Wishing the very best of luck to everyone involved.’

The circular economy goes beyond the management of waste to focus on reducing the amount of raw materials used and maximising their value. It is a model of production and consumption that includes sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible.

The Full Circle Awards celebrate and recognise people who are driving positive change through circular living. The winners will be announced later this month. The award categories are Repair and Reuse Champion; Community Circular Champion; Creative Circular Artist; Circular Living Advocate; Best Community Campaign and Young Circular Star (Under 18).
