A HGV driver who tested positive for cocaine and cannabis was arrested by Laois gardaí today.
The huge Volvo truck was seized and towed away this morning, after it was stopped at the first MIT (mandatory intoxicant testing) checkpoint of the day.
Following a roadside drug test carried out by the Laois Roads Policing Unit, the lorry driver proved positive for both cannabis and cocaine.
The driver was arrested and is facing a court appearance, while the lorry was impounded.
Posting a photo on social media tonight, Laois gardaí said: ‘Volvo safety ends when the driver’s high. Volvo builds some of the safest trucks on the roads today - advanced braking, collision avoidance, driver-assist systems designed to save lives.
‘This morning though none of these features mattered … The reality is:
‘No system can override impairment.
‘No technology can correct bad judgement.
‘That's why these checkpoints are carried out.’
