Laois gardaí issue warning to homeowners after spate of burglaries

Laois-Offaly crime prevention officer Sgt Graham Kavanagh
GARDAÍ are warning people to increase security following a series of burglaries in the county over the past few days.
In one disturbing incident, a woman discovered three intruders on their way upstairs at a house in Stradbally during the afternoon.
Less than an hour earlier, a rear patio door was smashed at a home in Mountmellick and cash was stolen from the property.
Laois-Offaly crime prevention officer Sgt Graham Kavanagh has urged residents to be extra-mindful of security as evenings get darker. People should also contact gardaí immediately if they notice anything out of the ordinary, whether an unfamiliar car or individuals or any suspicious activity in their area.
Gardaí are investigating a number of local burglaries, including a break-in at a house in Mountmellick last Thursday afternoon. A rear patio door was smashed to gain access to the property in Harbour Court at about 4pm and a money box containing cash was stolen.
A man aged in his 20s, described as about 6ft tall and wearing dark clothing, is believed to have been involved in the burglary.
Less than an hour later, a rear door was forced open at a home in the Cill Beg Manor housing estate in Stradbally. Three intruders were on their way upstairs when they were disturbed by a woman at about 4.50pm.
Fortunately, the trio fled the scene in a black Volswagon Golf car and nothing was taken from the house.
Other break-ins include a burglary at The Gate House pub in Emo last Wednesday 11 September, when a till was stolen from the premises at about 5am. (See page 2).
Sgt Kavanagh urged people to be extra vigilant, with the advice ‘Lock it, light it, alarm it and keep an eye out.’ He said: “Lock your doors and windows, use your lights and timers to make your home look busy and set that alarm, even when you’re at home.” Witnesses or anyone with information regarding any of the burglaries is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station at 057 8674100.
