A YOUNG man who went into the same shop on four separate occasions and took a Kinder Bueno bar each time and left without paying for them appeared at Portlaoise District Court last week on four counts of theft.
Lee Cullen (18), Heather Lane, Esker Hills, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of Kinder Bueno bars totalling €7.58 on 9 March, the theft of another bar valued at 3.79 on 10 March and the theft of a similar bar again, valued at 3.79, on 23 March, all from the Esker Hills Shop.
Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his client, “who doesn’t present as a bad person,” has underlying health issues and could give no explanation for his behaviour as he has no issue with intoxicants.
He said that while the goods that were taken amounted to over €15, Mr Cullen had brought €20 with him to court to pay back to the shop.
When Judge Susan Fay was told that the defendant is not currently working, she remanded him on continuing bail to the 22 June sitting of the court and instructed he provide proof of his attempts at engaging in further education or seeking employment adding: “There’s plenty of work out there.”
