Laois road reopens after crash death tragedy

THE main route from Abbeyleix to Portlaoise has reopened, following a fatal crash that claimed the life of a young man last night.
In an update just after 9am today, gardaí said: ‘Road reopened. Thoughts and prayers with the families affected at this time.’
The single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle happened on the N77, at the junction of the Portlaoise Road and Ballyroan Road in Abbeyleix, shortly before 8pm.
The motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was later pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The body of the deceased man was removed to the mortuary at Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.
The scene was preserved pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators this morning.
The road from Main Street in Abbeyleix to Tonduff Cross on the Portlaoise Road was closed after the crash, which happened at about 7.50pm, and traffic diversions were set up.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
Any road users or pedestrians who were in the area between 7pm and 8pm and have camera footage, including dash-cam, are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
