BATTERIES are being stolen from a digital sign outside a Laois school as they can be used in electric lawnmowers.
That’s according to cllr John King, who made the claim at a council meeting last week.
Cllr King said batteries were removed twice from the radar warning sign outside St Colmcille’s NS in Errill.
“I've heard these batteries seem to fit lawnmowers and that’s why they are being taken,” he told the September meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.
The Rathdowney councillor pointed out that nearly 100 children attend the school, as he called for repairs to the damaged digital school sign as soon as possible following the latest incident.
He also asked the council to install pencil bollards outside the school in the interest of children’s safety. He was supported by cllr James Kelly.
Senior engineer James Dowling replied that the county council’s public lighting section would arrange for the damaged school sign to be repaired to improve road safety. The request for pencil bollards will also be followed up.
