TEACHERS in Laois are buzzing after the launch of pollinator lesson plans that will be used in schools all over the county.

The plans aimed at enhancing biodiversity education were unveiled on 24 March by Laois Education Support Centre (LESC), in collaboration with the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC) and Laois County Council.

The colourful launch held at the LESC premises on the Block Road, Portlaoise was attended by teachers from across the county and featured key figures in the field of education and biodiversity.

Officially opening the event, Laois County Council cathaoirleach cllr Pádraig Fleming highlighted the wonderful work of many local communities to promote biodiversity.

Kate Chandler from the NBDC explored the importance of pollinators in sustaining the environment and the crucial role education plays in fostering a new generation of biodiversity champions. The lesson plans give teachers practical ways to integrate them into their schools and local communities.

Catherine Doolan of the LESC expressed the centre’s commitment to the project, emphasising how the lesson plans align with the curriculum while inspiring hands-on learning.

She said: "This initiative provides teachers with the resources they need to bring the importance of biodiversity and pollination into the classroom in a meaningful way.” The crucial need for the project was underlined by LESC chair Liam O’Neill, who highlighted the stark 75% decline of pollinators over the past 30 years.

As part of the launch, teachers who are part of the LESC’s Cúram Gardening Project received educational materials for this year’s vegetable gardening project, further reinforcing the connection between pollinators and food production.

The resources provided will help schools to create pollinator-friendly spaces, fostering sustainability while engaging students in real-world environmental action.

A spokesperson said: “The success of the launch marks an exciting step forward in promoting biodiversity awareness among young learners in Laois. Schools are encouraged to implement the pollinator lesson plans and participate in pollinator-friendly initiatives throughout the year.”

The booklet of 10 lesson plans is available to download on Laois.ie, while a hard copy will be sent to every primary school in Laois.
