Dear Editor,
MYSELF and the board and the residents of Kilminchy Retirement Village The Green - We are very disappointed, upset and annoyed to read a front-page article in your newspaper last week. It also surprised us that it was somebody who remained anonymous. It was full of many events that never happened in our estate.
First, I would like to tell you something about our retirement village which has no connection with the larger Kilminchy area. We have a total of 70 units, half of them 2 bed detached bungalows and the other half 2 bed apartments with about 8 one bed. Residents must be over 55-years-old. We have an AGM each year where we elect a board of management and officers and all are volunteers. We are a very caring community and look out for each other. This year we rebuilt our very large gazebo using our own funds and we had 60/70 residents who came out and enjoyed afternoon tea on a sunny day last month. We have a Christmas party each year. Our estate looks really well thanks to the hard work of LStep.
The article stated a woman and two children were racially abused. We have no children living in our estate. We have had no one physically abused. No cars were broken into and no one lay at the entrance to our estate; nobody blocked our entrance. I live at that entrance. I have two CCTV cameras in that area. We also have CCTV around our estate. We are very security conscious.
On the issue of fireworks most areas experience a problem this time each year, even the President's Aras will probably have more fireworks before 24th October. Joking aside, these fireworks are dangerous and can start fires and frighten animals. The garda have been very helpful to us and have organised the fire brigade to be on the alert. The gardaí organises the patrol car to drive around our estate to show their presents.
We have a great relationship with the gardaí and they have made themselves available at all times.
It was great to see two garda on bicycles around our area over the past week.
Best regards, Paddy Kennedy.
