MASKED raiders attempted to break in to a home in a Laois housing estate soon after midnight last night, according to a resident.

The woman reported that burglars tried to enter the house in Portarlington via the back door, between 1am and 2am this morning.

Fortunately, the burglars were scared off by the woman’s husband and fled the scene in the Cathair Na gCapall estate.

The incident follows reports of attempted burglaries involving three males in the town’s Station Court over the past few days.

Issuing a warning to other householders on the Port News Facebook page today, the woman said that the men in Cathair Na gCapall were dressed in black and had their faces covered with balaclavas or masks. She is not sure whether two or three men were involved.

She said: ‘Such a scary thing to happen … Nothing or nowhere is safe anymore. I'm so angry.’

The woman asked residents in the area with CCTV cameras or doorbell cameras to contact the Port News page if they have footage from the relevant time, between 1am and 2am on Thursday 24 April, in the hope that the culprits can be identified.
