THE popular television programme ‘Home Grown’ returns to RTÉ One with a brand new third series celebrating Irish horticulture and takes a look behind the walls of one of the prisons in Portlaoise.
Industry advocates and presenters Kitty Scully and Colm O'Driscoll once again travel the country in this popular series, searching for stories that highlight the very best in the Irish horticulture industry.
The new series explores everything from innovative growing techniques to the extraordinary people shaping Ireland's green spaces, profiling small producers, and highlighting the generosity of community gardening for a good cause.
The seven part series also goes behind the scenes at Ireland's largest horticulture festival Bord Bia Bloom, highlighting the resilience and ingenuity of Ireland's horticulture industry, looks at the intrigues of creating habitats for animals, and explores many other stories that inspire growth and connection.
In the first series of the season on Wednesday 5 March at 8pm Colm goes behind the walls of the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise and talks to Work Training Officers Kieran Gavigan and John Donoghue about a unique horticulture programme that has been thriving for the past ten years.
He learns about the horticultural education programme within the prison walls that not only teaches the prisoners involved invaluable gardening skills, but provides a sense of purpose, fostering growth and rehabilitation through the power of education.
