Mountmellick Community School was alive with activity on Wednesday 12 November when it hosted the Ógra Live Well Expo 2025.

This major event is now in its second year and is dedicated to promoting positive mental health, resilience, community engagement and sustainability among young people.

Originally set up by Frances Kerry – La Rosa, Deputy Principal and Catriona Ryan, Volunteer Laois, to create a space for young people to find out the value of volunteering and how building relationships can create a positive attitude and build relationships.

More than 1,600 students from primary and post-primary schools across Laois attended the event this year, creating a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the campus.

The expo, which featured 54 participating organisations, aimed to equip young people with practical tools to support their wellbeing and personal development. Students explored an extensive range of stalls offering information, demonstrations and hands-on activities with each exhibitor contributing to the broader message of encouraging young people to build confidence, adopt healthy habits and take an active role in shaping their communities.

Midlands 103 broadcast live from the event, with the ever hospitable Will Faulkner and crew adding to the lively atmosphere with music, interviews and prize giveaways.

On arrival, students received goody bags filled with information leaflets, treats, fun small toys, Volunteer Laois hats, motivational wrist bands and the Green Ribbon pin for Positive Mental Health. A charitable collection for PATH also took place during the day, highlighting the importance of compassion and community support, and reminding students of the impact small acts of kindness can have.

The expo programme included impressive performances from the Mountmellick Community School band and dancers, showcasing the talent and spirit within the school community. Artist Maria Dunne was also in attendance, interacting with students and adding a creative dimension to the event. It was One of the standout moments of the day was a series of talks delivered by Dr Eddie Murphy. Fennell, fitness instructor, Tommy Delaney and several Mountmellick Community School teachers. Their messages of resilience, determination and positivity resonated strongly with the students.
