A FANTASTIC young dance group from Mountmellick is set to take Electric Picnic by storm this weekend.
Excitement is building for the eight-strong group from the town’s Dance on Stage School, as they go through their hectic final paces before two upcoming appearances on the Hazelwood Stage.
Commercial dancers with star quality and lots of high-energy girl power, their spectacular moves are sure to ignite audiences at their shows on both Saturday and Sunday.
The teenagers scooped a chance to perform at the festival with a knockout performance in the finals of the Electric Youth contest, the first dance group ever to win a place in the competition.
The girls range in age from 14 to 17 and all attend Mountmellick CS, where they gave a dazzling display of their dance skills for students and staff before heading off to the festival.
Ruth (17) and Róisin (15) Rawlinson are joined in the group by 14-year-olds Lacey Dent, Lexie Kelly, Oliwia Falade, Amerah Bennett, Sarah Obaro and Amber Owens. They will perform during the Electric Youth slot between noon and 1.40pm on both days.
Delighted dance teacher Louise Ahern, who runs the Dance On Stage School, is extremely proud of the girls’ talent and dedication. She hopes that local supporters will turn out in force to cheer them on during their well-deserved turn in the spotlight.
The only other Laois winner in the competition was The Controversy, an up and coming band from Portlaoise, who will also appear during the Electric Youth slot on Sunday.
Now in its sixth year, the competition is a collaboration between Youth Work Ireland Laois, Electric Picnic, LOETB and Creative Ireland.
