Mountrath looks forward to upgrades costing almost €320,000

The Mountrath Town Team is overseeing major enhancements in the town centre

UPGRADES costing almost €320,000 are getting underway in Mountrath, ranging from a redesign of the town square to improved landscaping and signage along the river walk.

The Mountrath Town Team (MTT) secured funding for a series of projects, which will be implemented over the next year to regenerate the town centre.

MTT chairman Mark Sheeran said: “We are committed to implementing these schemes over the course of the next year. People living and visiting Mountrath will start to see real improvements in our town centre.” The group secured a total of €316,800 in the past 12 months for four key projects, in collaboration with Laois County Council.

The largest slice of funding is €250,0000 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme which will see improvements to The Square, better public lighting in the town centre, improved landscaping and signage along the river walk and Patrick Street and enhancements to the farmers’ market.

Another €50,000 will be spent on redesigning The Square, as part of a ‘Town and Village Project Development Measure’.

Meanwhile, a design project to explore ways to enhance the White Horse River as an amenity received €10,000 from the Irish Architecture Foundation, while €6,800 was granted under the Community Climate Action Fund to provide a bicycle repair station, rack and shelter in the town centre.

Consultation clinics will be held in Mountrath over the next year to get feedback and input on the schemes from residents, businesses, community groups and people who visit the town.
