Mountrath's Cosy choir to celebrate tenth anniversary with special concert

WHILE Timahoe, Portlaoise and Stradbally have had relatively new choirs for the past few years, Mountrath has had its own for the past ten years.

What started out in 2015 with a few people singing in the mornings at The Cosy Café in the town, it has grown into something special with a 30 strong membership and this year it celebrates its tenth anniversary with a sold out solo concert in Bloom HQ  this Friday night at 7pm.

Ten years ago, the small group gathered in the local café to sing a few songs to lift the spirits and brought a bit of cheer to the mornings.

On one of its members, Michael Farrell, suggested the group should form a choir and so it was that the Cosy Choir was born.

Since then, the choir has sung at many local community events – from turning on the Christmas lights, to commemorations like the 1916 Rising, a visit to the Dáil and singing with Mountrath Community School and at Ballyfin Hotel for a special Christmas Eve celebration.

At the heart of the Cosy Choir, and its driving force, is its conductor Bernie Coss. Her passion, encouragement and dedication have shaped the choir into the special group it is today.

Today, the Cosy Choir is a community family who love to sing together and the concert on Friday is a celebration of everything the group has become over the years.

Funds raised from the concert will go towards Laois hospice and the Irish Guide Dogs.
