New book explores Laois childhood memories

Part of the front cover of the Mountmellick memoir, which will be launched on 30 September
CHILDHOOD memories of Mountmellick will be explored and celebrated at the launch of a beautiful new book on Tuesday 30 September.
Local man Ger Healion will unveil his memoir
at a gathering in Mountmellick Library. The book is of particular interest to locals and is reflective of Ger’s time growing up and living in ‘the small town with a big heart’ in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. It is full of stories and characters that also relate more widely to the small-town Ireland of the time.
The memoir received warm praise from Today FM veteran presenter Ian Dempsey, whose back cover recommendation says: ‘What a great read. I’ve just been to a place that I’ve never set foot in - all thanks to Ger - Mountmellick, beautifully and humorously described in this great book.
‘It’s all so relatable, from making yourself fly like Harry Worth to getting your music career off to a start, to worries about getting expelled from school. We’ve all been there!’
An evocative, entertaining, thoughtful and deeply considered memoir of one man’s life and the influence of his home town on his formative years, the book is mesmerising and often very funny as it honours a time, a place and a community.
All are welcome to the launch at 7pm, when the book will be available to buy.
