OLDER people in Laois are urged to prepare for harsh winter weather, with the launch of a new guide containing helpful advice and warnings.
The ‘My Severe Weather Ready Guide’, which was officially launched at Laois Partnership headquarters in Portlaoise, has tips on preparing for severe weather as well as a checklist of items to make a weather-ready pack.
The guide designed for Laois-Offaly also provides information on weather warnings, to ensure that people are familiar with and understand the range of warnings issued by Met Éireann.
The project stemmed from HSE consultation with Meals on Wheels drivers in Offaly Local Development Company Ltd.
Following the launch on Friday 21 November, a spokesperson said: ‘Severe weather has the ability to disrupt our daily lives in all sorts of ways, such as loss of power as well as damage to our property. Being prepared reduces the risk of harm to people and property and it is important to be prepared, as severe weather can happen quickly.’
The project was an interagency initiative involving the HSE, Age Friendly, An Garda Síochána, Offaly Local Development Company (OLDC), Laois Partnership, Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB), ALONE, Civil Defence, Adult Literacy for Life and the Laois and Offaly Regional Coalition partners.
Copies of the guide are available at a range of agency outlets across both counties, including garda stations and health centres. For further information, contact Laois Partnership at 057 8661900 or email tlatham@loetb.ie.
