A NEW book celebrating the 250th anniversary of Abbeyleix sold out within just one hour, at a memorable launch night in Morrissey’s pub.

Copies of ‘Abbeyleix Celebrates 250’ flew out the doors of the legendary venue on Main Street, which was also marking its 250th birthday.

The historic pub was packed to the rafters on Saturday 24 November for the birthday celebration and launch of the book, which is the third produced by local historian Noel Burke and photographer James G Carroll.

A delighted Noel said: “Within just one hour, every copy of the book we had was sold out thanks to the tireless efforts of Aidan Dunphy, who has supported our previous launches too.”

On a night to remember, Abbeyleix 250 committee chair and former Morrissey’s manager John Nolan spoke passionately about the heritage town’s remarkable year of celebration, with a series of events held throughout the year to mark the magnificent milestone.

Abbeyleix Golf Club captain Jack Nolan gave a glowing introduction to Noel and James, praising their dedication to preserving the remarkable history and heritage of the town that was founded in 1775.

Noel describes the book as a treasure trove of about 50 captivating and richly illustrated stories, bringing to life the history of the town and the families that shaped it.

After the sellout launch, extra books were ordered from the UK publisher and arrived just in time for Christmas, at a not-for-profit price of €15.

The book is available in Abbeyleix at Cleland’s Eurospar, Red Door Gift Shop, Abbeyleix Post Office, Heritage House and Anthology, as well as Allbooks in Lyster Square, Portlaoise and on Amazon UK.
