New medical centre opens its doors in Laois 

A NEW medical centre has been opened in Portlaoise by Dr Maaz Seerat and Dr Zafar Ul Islam, whose aim is to provide accessible, high-quality and patient-focused healthcare to the local community.

Both doctors have trained and worked in Ireland and believe that they have developed a strong understanding of the needs of patients and families in the midlands. They said that they felt there was an opportunity in the locality to create a modern practice where patients can receive continuity of care in a welcoming and professional environment – particularly given the ongoing shortage of GP services in the county, a problem which is echoed nationwide.

In a statement, they said: “Portlaoise is a growing town, with new families and communities moving into the area all the time. We wanted to build something that would grow alongside the town and provide patients with a GP service they can rely on for years to come.” The practice will provide both GMS and private GP consultations. The doctors also hope to provide a broad range of services, including, but not limited to, women's and men's health, chronic disease management, musculoskeletal care and other services traditionally delivered in general practice.

For Dr Zafar Ul Islam said the new practice is about more than simply opening another medical centre. “We want patients to feel that they are being listened to and that their concerns matter. Our vision is to combine good clinical care with a friendly, accessible and modern service.” The doctors see the practice as a long-term investment in Portlaoise and its community. They hope that, as the practice grows, they will be able to expand their team and the range of services available to patients.
