Parking improvements sought between John’s Square and St Mary’s Hall in Portlaoise

Cathaoirleach of the Portlaoise Municipal District Council cllr Paddy Buggy described a section of roadway between the entrance to John's Square and the entrance to Saint Mary's Hall as a "bottleneck."

STAFF from the road design section of Laois County Council are to undertake a review of a section of roadway along the Borris Road in Portlaoise between the entrance to John’s Square and the entrance to Saint Mary’s Hall with a view to improving the parking arrangements for local residents.

That was the response to the Cathaoirleach of the Portlaoise Municipal District Council cllr Paddy Buggy at the March meeting when he called for the council “to examine the section of the Borris Road between the entrance to John’s Square and the entrance to Saint Mary’s Hall with a view to improving the parking arrangements for the residents who live on this section of the road and the issue with respect to the road width, two way traffic and the new bus service.”

As well as undertaking the review along the road cathaoirleach Buggy was informed that the roadway would be looked at for “any future proposals under the local transport plan for Portlaoise.”

“This is an area where there is a bottleneck currently,” said cathaoirleach Buggy.

He said: “The houses in that area were built long before the huge developments that took place further out the Borris Road. A number of local residents are finding it very difficult to park, some of who are quite elderly. Any help to facilitate them would be greatly appreciated.”
