ONE of the biggest public playgrounds in Laois will close next week until further notice, while major upgrades are carried out.

Rathdowney Playground will be closed from Monday 1 December, as work begins on a €95,000 makeover.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2026, subject to weather conditions.

In a closure notice published on its website this afternoon, Laois Co Council confirmed that the playground would close on 1 December 'until further notice’. The council said: ‘This in the interest of public safety, while upgrading works are in progress.’

As reported in the Laois Nationalist earlier this month, a major refurbishment of the playground was due to begin at the end of November with completion anticipated next March.

The town’s Gort na nÓg playground, located at St Fergal's College, includes a multi-use games area (MUGA) with a silver slide and towers that are a huge attraction for children. The amenity opened in August 2012.

The playground will have to close intermittently while the works are being carried out, according to Laois Co Council. While temporary closures will be required at various stages during the four-month renovation, it’s hoped that disruption will be kept to a minimum.

The playground enhancement project was granted €95,000 this year under the Community Recognition Fund (CRF). The upgrade will include a range of new play equipment and renovation of existing facilities.
