Portlaoise Court: Judge tells feuding couple to grow up

Judge Andrew Cody gave the warning at Portlaoise District Court

A FEUDING couple who withdrew complaints against each other at Portlaoise District Court were told to “grow up” by a judge.

Judge Andrew Cody gave the warning in court on Thursday, after hearing that both the man and the woman wanted to withdraw complaints against each other regarding alleged verbal abuse and other issues. Each has a safety order in force against the other.

Judge Cody asked: “Are both sides going to grow up here? They are frequent fliers in the family law court and it’s time they grew up.” Solicitor Philip Meagher replied that this was an issue that was explained to all clients.

The man and woman were both charged with breaching a safety order at an address in a Laois town on 24 August 2024. Aged 38 and 32 respectively, they cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Judge Cody struck out the charges but warned: “I will not do that again if they are just wasting the court’s time.”
