PORTLAOISE GAA has paid heartfelt tribute to club legend Noel Scully, who sadly passed away yesterday.
A member of the squad that famously won the All Ireland Club Football Final of 1982/83, Noel will be laid to rest on Friday following a funeral Mass at St Peter and Paul's Church.
Portlaoise GAA said on social media this evening: ‘We were very saddened to learn of the passing of another club legend yesterday. Noel Scully was an excellent club footballer, who’ll be remembered for his contribution to great town teams in the 1970s and ‘80s in particular.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Bridie, his daughter Catriona and his sons Padraig and Peter, as well as the wider family and friends.
Famously, Noel was a member of the squad, alongside his brother and team captain Liam, that brought ultimate glory to Portlaoise GAA when they won the All Ireland Club Football Final of 1982/83, by defeating Clan na nGael in Cloughjordan on a score line of 0-12 to 2-0.
Prior to this, Noel had been a tenacious and capable right half-back on the team that won the club’s second Leinster Championship, when they got the better of Cooley Kickhams in Croke Park in 1976.
He was a quiet man by nature but he always stayed abreast of everything in Portlaoise GAA and he was very proud to be associated with the club.
His passing is in quick succession of a fellow club comrade of his John Joe Ging - who also starred in the 1976 Leinster winning campaign, and it is a sad few weeks for the club to have lost these men who gave so much of their time and talents, and who put their bodies on the line to bring glory to Portlaoise GAA.
Thank you for everything Noel - you will always be remembered in the club. May your gentle soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
