STOLEN goods worth more than €3,000 have been seized by gardaí at a property in Portlaoise.

Expensive items that included perfumes, clothing, alcohol and baby products were among the goods discovered, when gardaí called to the property with a search warrant this week.

Two people were arrested as a result of the search, which was part of a follow-up investigation into what gardaí describe as ‘prolific’ organised theft from local retailers.

Gardaí said this afternoon that officers attached to the local Retail Crime Unit, working under Operation Táirge, achieved ‘significant success’ with the arrest of two ‘suspected prolific retail theft offenders’.

Gardaí said: ‘As part of a follow-up investigation, a search warrant was executed at a residential property in Portlaoise, resulting in the recovery of a large volume of suspected stolen goods, with an estimated value in excess of €3,000.

‘Items recovered include high-value retail stock such as perfumes, clothing, alcohol, baby products and household goods. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the affected retailers.’

Both suspects have been charged to appear before the courts, while gardaí are also continuing their investigations in other locations.

Gardaí also reminded retailers to report all thefts promptly, saying that ‘timely information remains critical to disrupting organised activity’, with such crimes having a serious impact on businesses, staff and local communities.
