Portlaoise main street closed in electrical emergency

LOWER Main Street in Portlaoise had to be closed this afternoon while the fire service dealt with an electrical emergency.
Firefighters rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised at lunchtime and the street was quickly cordoned off, with traffic diversions in place.
According to passers-by, sparks and flames were coming from the roof of a vacant building when firefighters arrived at the scene.
It is understood that the incident was caused by an electrical fault. The busy street was closed for the afternoon, while emergency services worked to make the area safe.
Photos taken by the Laois Weather site show the large team of fire service and emergency crews working at the scene.
Gardaí set up traffic detours, while ESB personnel also attended the scene. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
