Portlaoise restaurant to close after 40 years
Portlaoise Chinese takeaway and restaurant will close in January
A POPULAR Chinese restaurant and takeaway in Portlaoise is to close down after 40 years in business.
Run by the Tsang family, Portlaoise Chinese on Church Avenue sadly announced today that it will close its doors in January.
The restaurant and busy takeaway has been a central part of hospitality in the heart of the town since the 1980s.
In a message to ‘dear valued customers’, owner Alan Tsang and family said on social media: ‘After 40 wonderful years of serving our community, we have made the heartfelt decision to close our doors on 5 January, 2026.
‘We want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you, who have shared meals, laughter and memories with us over the decades. Your support, friendship and loyalty have meant the world to our family and our team.’
Holding out hope of another venture in future, the message added: ‘This may feel like an ending, but we see it as a new beginning - an opportunity to reflect, to grow and, perhaps, to welcome you again in a new form someday.
‘Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for being part of our story. We wouldn’t have come this far without you.’
The announcement prompted dismay but also many good wishes on social media, with one customer commenting: ‘A sad day for Portlaoise, the best in Laois and beyond. Thank you for serving us so well over the years, you all will be missed.’
Another said: ‘Enjoy your retirement, Alan and the family, well deserved after all the years you have been there for a lovely restaurant and takeaway.’
Others remarked that the restaurant had the best food in town, while one long-term customer recalled: ‘Many a beautiful meal we had in your restaurant and takeaway. Going back as far as Egan’s Christmas parties/birthday parties, we were all looked after the best.’
