PORTLAOISE rocked to the sounds of summer when talented young musicians gave fantastic live performances at a memorable show in ‘The Fort’, the ideal outdoor event space in the grounds of Laois Music Centre.

The sizzling show was the culmination of a week immersed in music at the annual Music Generation Laois (MGL) Summer School of Rock and Pop.

The school from 7-13 July gave young people aged 10-18 access to high quality equipment and a team of experienced music mentors, in a creative and fun opportunity that could lead to future fame.

The group got a chance to develop original music, perform solo or become part of bands and take part in masterclasses with guest musicians.

The action-packed week included a visit to the legendary Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, busking at Portlaoise Farmers’ Market, open mic sessions and listening to informative and enjoyable stories from MGL alumni.

The final show at The Fort was a real rocker, with great performances from local bands ranging from Pancóga to The Bass Brothers and many more.

More information about the annual summer school, which is supported by the Music Generation/Arts Council partnership creativity and collaboration fund, is available from musicgenerationlaois.ie.

Thriving MGL is part of Music Generation, a national music education programme initiated by Music Network and co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds together with the Department of Education and local music education partnerships.

Locally, MGL is part of Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) as lead partner and is supported by Laois Co Council.
