A PORTLAOISE College student has seen his leaving certificate points rise from 613 to the maximum possible 625 after having his computer science exam script reviewed with his teacher. Nikola Ilic initially achieved an impressive 613 points in this year’s leaving certificate. However, after reviewing his computer science script with his teacher Vincent Carroll, Nikola was upgraded to an H1, bringing his final CAO points total to a maximum 625.

The result highlights the importance of students seeking advice from their teachers and checking their exam scripts if they are unsure about a result. Nikola is now studying engineering with management at Trinity College Dublin, a five-year course which combines engineering with design, manufacturing and management and leads to a masters in engineering. The course had a CAO points requirement of 602 this year.

Congratulating Nikola on his outstanding achievement, Portlaoise College principal Noel Daly said: “Getting 613 points in the leaving certificate was an exceptional achievement in itself, but for Nikola to take the time to review his computer science script with Vincent Carroll and subsequently have his grade upgraded to an H1 is a fantastic outcome,” said Mr Daly. “It also demonstrates the importance of students checking their scripts and speaking to their teachers if they have any concerns. Nikola should be very proud of what he has achieved and we wish him every success in Trinity.” According to the school, Nikola has settled into college well and is enjoying his new course, although his daily commute from Laois to Trinity takes around three hours. He said the course is broad, covering areas including chemical, electrical, mechanical and civil engineering, while placing a particular emphasis on mechanical engineering, manufacturing, design and management.
