Portlaoise whiskey firm in running for top award

The product is particularly popular in the US

A PORTLAOISE whiskey firm is in high spirits following a nomination for the prestigious Export Industry Awards.

Biggar & Leith, makers of Shanky’s Whip Irish black whiskey liqueur, has been shortlisted in the Sustainable Food and Drink Category for the 2025 awards.

With its headquarters in New Jersey, the company has centres on Grattan Street in Portlaoise, as well as the UK and Dublin.

The company selects fine spirits from established, family-owned distilleries and Shanky’s Whip is particularly popular in the US market.

Announcing the shortlist on 6 June, award organisers said that category winners and the 2025 Overall Exporter of the Year will be announced at the 23rd Export Industry Awards and Gala Dinner on 3 October, at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre.

The awards recognise excellence across Ireland’s export sector. This year, there are 12 award categories, ranging from manufacturing to life sciences, covering topics such as sustainability and innovation.

Speaking at the announcement, Simon McKeever, CEO of the Irish Exporters Association (IEA), said, “The Export Industry Awards are a celebration of the remarkable achievements of Ireland’s exporters. I would like to congratulate all shortlisted companies on this outstanding accomplishment.

“The companies have not only demonstrated exceptional innovation and resilience but have also set a benchmark for excellence in the export sector.”

Shortlisted companies will have an opportunity to participate in the IEA Masterclass given by Trinity Executive Education on 16 June. The Masterclass aims to support exporting companies and those who support the industry, in developing adaptive strategies for fast-changing international markets.
