THE most recent meeting of Laois Co Council heard that one of Laois' primary tourist attractions should be given a greater boost through the introduction of lighting to catch the eye of passers-by as it is uniquely situated and can be viewed far and wide, including from a number of local roads ‒ the Rock of Dunamase.

The Rock of Dunamase is the name given to the sprawling network of ruins that crowns the valley of the O'Moores just outside Portlaoise. Originally an early Christian settlement that was pillaged by the Vikings in 842, it went on to become one of the most important Anglo-Norman strongholds in Leinster. The grounds also include the imposing ruins of a centuries-old castle.

The Rock is one of the most celebrated tourist attractions in Laois and commands spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

The proposal was brought to the 30 March meeting of Laois Co Council by Cllr Tommy Mulligan, who said: "I just feel that we should try and showcase this tourist attraction as best we can. It's one of our more popular tourist attractions, with a fortress that's over 1,000 years old and a castle that is over 800 years old."

The councillor made a similar proposal to have the rock lit in green a few months ago, but it was rejected as he, admittedly, did not factor in how the associated light pollution would affect the local wildlife eco-system that has sprung up around the rock. Cllr Mulligan emphasised that he fully understood the need to protect local wildlife and had amended his proposal accordingly. He proposed that, instead of having it lit up every day of the year, that the council arrange to have it aglow on days of public significance ‒ St Brigid’s day, St Patrick’s day, Easter and international women’s day.

He continued: "I just think that it would be a great opportunity to showcase the new developments on sight. It would be great if we could get permission from the OPW to light up the fortress for that occasion. For that day or two we have the new opening."

A dedicated car park and toilet facilities will be among the improvements to the visitor experience at the Rock of Dunamase prior to the redevelopment ceremony.

Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald and a score of other councillors lauded Cllr Mulligan’s proposal and agreed to support his efforts.
