Rise in the number of new cars being sold in Laois

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released their official 242 new vehicle registrations statistics for September 2024.

1388 new cars have been registered in Laois since January of this year, a 4.68% increase when compared to the same period last year.

So far this year, 159 new electric cars have been registered in Laois, 22.82% lower than this time last year.

Electric car registrations nationally are down 25.7% so far this year compared with the same period last year while general car registrations are down 1.4% in the same period. This makes September the eighth month this year with decreasing electric car registrations all-over.

The September figures in the SIMI report show a 30.8% decrease in new electric car registrations when compared with the same month last year, and a 10.3% decrease in general car registrations compared to last September.

Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General said: “The new electric vehicle segment has experienced another month of decline in registrations, marking the eighth consecutive month of this trend. With Budget 2025 now only hours away, it is vital that we see positive measures from Government to support the EV project and help reverse this drop in demand for EVs. Reinstating and extending EV supports, as well as investing in a reliable charging infrastructure, can help regain lost momentum in the electric vehicle project. The Industry remains committed to supporting the transition to electrification.” The SIMI report also showed that petrol cars continue to lead the new car market at 30.99% followed by Diesel at 22.98%, then Hybrid (Petrol Electric) at 21.0%, Electric at 13.76%, and Plug-In Electric Hybrid at 9.71%.
